Watch: My Lovely Sam Soon
My friend introduced me to my first kdrama and I got sucked in immediately. We just finished watching about the life and love of Sam Soon.
We meet our intrepid heroine as she’s confronting her cheating boyfriend at a hotel and there are plenty of cringes to go around. Even in the last episode Sam soon admits that she has terrible taste in men.
Something I loved was that she is relatable and happy endings weren’t being handed out willy nilly. Something I didn’t like is that it had more orphans than a Disney princess convention. It definitely got into heavier topics than light and fluffy atmosphere first impression. The main character’s struggle with her weight was hard to believe for an American who had a hard time noticing any extra weight in general.
Sam Soon is an old maid of 30, and accomplished pastry chef and despairs of ever finding her Mr Right. Her dating, relationship with her family, and love hate relationship with her own identity at all very relatable. I found myself chiding my own sam soonish behavior as if that helped either in the show or real life.
ALSO buckle up for some early 2000s fashion! Boot cut trousers and jeans, wide lapels, oversized silhouettes, eesh.
We watched on streaming service Vikki and the subtitles we’re spotty. Definitely watch this with the wiki open to learn about the social conventions, subtle wordplay, and inside jokes.
